THE EARLIEST RECORDED festivities in honour of a new year’s arrival date back some 4,000 years to ancient Babylon. The first new moon following the vernal equinox—the spring day with an equal amount of sunlight and darkness—heralded the start of a new year.
In 45 B.C., New Year’s Day was celebrated on January 1 for the first time as the Julian calendar took effect.
New Year’s Eve is one of the largest global celebrations, marking the last day of the year in the Gregorian calendar, December 31.
