Summer fun

Summer is here, and it's a fun new season for me, as I've taken over writing this column from my colleague Pierre Riel. (His new role with the company is executive vice president and chief operating officer for Costco's international division.) I'm delighted with this opportunity to point out some of the ways we work to maximize the value of your membership.

This is prime grilling season, and if you're a barbecue afficionado like me, this issue's cover story, which features successful Canadian women who are grilling up amazing dishes, can help you make the most of this barbecuing season. I encourage you to enjoy some of their recipes this summer. Whether you're new to the grill or a seasoned veteran, you'll find almost everything you need, from various types of grills to quality food, at Costco.

Over the last few years, most of us have spent much more time in our homes than ever before. Our Special Section, For Your Home, focuses on your indoor space. It includes a profile of Costco mattress supplier South Bay International, the company behind the renowned Sleep Science mattresses. If you've thought about optimizing the space in your home, there's a story with tips on how to make the rooms in your house serve more than one function. You'll also find a piece with ideas for improving your home's air quality.

I hope you enjoy backyard cookouts and your other plans for this summer.
